It is a program created by the United States government that grants 50,000 permanent residence visas (also known as green cards) each year using a law passed by Congress in 1990. US Diversity Visa Program winners are chosen randomly.

The annual US Diversity Visa Program provides permanent resident visas for people who meet simple yet strict eligibility requirements. These green cards allow them to live, work, and study legally in the United States and enter and leave the country freely. Green card holders also receive health, education, and other rights. They can also sponsor relatives to get green cards for themselves as well.

There are certain eligibility requirements that must be met if you wish to participate in US Diversity Visa Program. Eligible participants will be required to submit an online application during the application period to be announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The application period is expected to start in October and remain open until the beginning of November every year.

If you meet the mentioned eligibility requirements, you must submit your green card application in October. The results of your application will be released in May of the following year.

One of the most important things to be aware of about the US Diversity Visa Program is why it is named as it is. You’ll see it being referred to as “DV Program,” followed by a year. If you see, for example, that it has the name “DV 2018” then this means that the winners will get a green card in 2018, but you actually need to apply two years earlier during the month of October in 2016. Therefore, “DV 2018” means that you submission takes place in October 2016.

AOS happens when you are actually in the USA and it means changing your status. Consular processing means that you will meet someone at the US embassy in your country and complete the process of obtaining your green card.

The chances of winning the US Diversity Visa Program are roughly 1 in 50. Please remember that you can only submit one entry at a time – if you try to submit more, you will be automatically disqualified. The only way to increase your chances of winning is to apply for your eligible spouse as well. This is because if you win your spouse will receive a green card as well and vice versa.

There are two main restrictions. The first is that you must be born in an eligible country – you can find a list to check if you qualify here. The second is the education / work requirement.

The law dictates that each applicant must have at least a secondary education or its equivalent, or that during the past five years he has acquired work experience of two years in a profession that requires at least two years of training or experience.

Secondary education or its equivalent is defined as the successful completion of a twelve-year course of primary and secondary education in the United States or the successful completion in another country of an official course of elementary and secondary education comparable to secondary education in the United States of America. Documentary evidence of education or work experience should not be presented with the entry of the program but should be presented to the consular officer at the time of the visa interview.

What if the application was submitted early or late?

The only thing you can do to increase your chances of winning the US Diversity Visa Program is to ask your spouse (if he / she qualifies too) to apply as well. This will give you two entries to the Program, increasing your chances of winning.
