– California
When it comes to the total number of immigrants, California is by far the most popular state. In 2014 California was home to 10.5 million foreign-born, making 27% of its population immigrants. The most famous cities in California are San Francisco, San Diego, and of course Los Angeles. Who wouldn’t immediately think of Hollywood’s glamor when they think of the City of Angels (as it’s so often called)? In recent years, California has also been immediately associated with the IT and high-tech industry in Silicon Valley.
Tip: Although there is an 8-lane highway, handling traffic is part of life in Los Angeles. Living near your job has clear advantages and will save you time on your morning commute. Also surprisingly, California has many ski resorts.
– New York
With 4.5 million immigrants, New York State tied Texas for second place. All that needs to be said about New York has already been said – but still not enough! How do I find a place to live in the United States?
The first step is to move to the USA and the second is to decide where you want to live. There are a few things you should know before you start searching for a home or apartment in the USA. Firstly, it pays to already have a job because a large percentage of your salary will be used for housing in the USA.
Many green card holders live with family or friends when they move to the USA for the first time. Although it’s possible to search for a home or apartment online (i.e. before you leave for the United States), it’s much easier to obtain housing when you are already in the United States. Additionally, most landlords would like to meet their potential tenants in person and of course you will want to see where you will live. Searching for housing is best when you are already located in the United States.
As a new US resident looking for a home or apartment, you may encounter some unfamiliar words. So that you can focus on searching for a home rather than searching for a word in the dictionary, we would like to introduce you to some English words that you will encounter. Here is a list of important housing conditions as well as tips for finding your dream home:
Keep an eye out for “Apartment Available” or “For Rent” signs on buildings and community councils located in local libraries, grocery stores, community centers, and so forth.
Look in your local newspapers for a section called “Classified Ads”. Here, you will find a list of homes and apartments to buy or rent in your area.
If you would like someone to search on your behalf, search the Yellow Pages (phone book) for “property management” or “realtor”. As for the price, they will find a house according to your preference.
Ask a friend, family, or colleague if they know of any available apartments or houses.
There are a lot of websites on the Internet that list housing, but be sure to visit only the well-known ones.
How do I find a place to live in the United States?

Becoming an American citizen is the ultimate fulfilment of the American dream for many people around the world.
Obtaining US citizenship is your way of demonstrating your loyalty and commitment to the USA. By accepting, you agree to the responsibilities of being a US citizen and you agree to respect the laws of the country and its people. US citizenship gives you the same rights and privileges as all Americans. An American citizen has more responsibilities than a green card holder, but the advantages are also worth it.
All citizens of the United States, for example, have the right to vote in all elections and help determine who becomes president of the United States. Moreover, citizens can serve on a jury of court and apply for federal and state jobs reserved for US citizens only. There are no restrictions on the amount of time you can spend outside the United States if you are a citizen of the United States. In addition, citizens can issue petitions to have family members come to the United States and obtain a green card.
The process of applying for US citizenship is called naturalization. Green card holders or children of US citizens can apply for US citizenship. In general, the following requirements must be met to be eligible:
- You must be at least 18 years old at the time of your application (naturalization application).
- You must have lived in the United States for at least five years as a permanent resident (green card holder) or for 3 years if you are married to and live with a US citizen.
- You must have lived at least 30 months during the past five years in the United States and 18 months of the past three years if you are married to and live with a US citizen.
- You have lived in the same US state or USCIS region for at least three months before applying for citizenship.
- You must pass an English language test and a civil test, as well as demonstrate your understanding of the United States Constitution.
- You must uphold the laws of the United States of America and demonstrate the so-called good manners.
